Alamar

Alamar

In his award-winning film Pedro González-Rubio tells the story of the bond between a father and son. Their relationship deepens over a few days together on an atoll reef called Banco Chinchorro, off the coast of Mexico. In this simple setting the Mexican director (who also shot and edited the film) creates an encounter with nature which has a weightlessness tinged with melancholy.

The film opens with Jorge Machado and Roberta Palombini as a happy couple - the troubles set in with the birth of Natan. Now divorced, their young son travels from his mother’s home in Rome to spend time with his father in Mexico. From here on, the film-maker puts nature centre stage, and focuses on the close relationship between the father and child. Their lyrical farewell plays out against the backdrop of the ocean which surrounds them.

Shot in a documentary style, Pedro González-Rubio’s film is an ode to nature with captivating images, like those of the alligator patiently circling his next meal. It’s a film full of beauty and intimacy, and is a sensual immersion. Under-water sequences are intercut with scenes of freshly-caught fish being prepared and you can almost smell the meal, almost pull up a chair with the protagonists. The film-maker uses off-centre framing to great effect, sometimes leaving the characters barely in shot – an oblique gaze which gives them the space to commune with the sea and the landscape. Alamar is a floating film, a moment of poetry and calm suspended in time.
